Principles Of Effective Leadership

Matt. 15:14

Effective Leaders Involve Others (Delegate)

Barnabas went to seek out Saul (Acts 11:25-26) and worked with him in Antioch.  Saul had been in Tarsus since shortly after his conversion (Acts 9:30).

Barnabas worked with John Mark

Paul worked with Timothy, Silas, etc.

Effective Leaders Lead Moral Lives

I Tim 3:2,3 "blameless, sober, of good behavior, not given to wine, not greedy of filthy lucre, not a brawler"

Heb.13:7 "Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation."

I Cor. 9:27 "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."

II Cor. 2:11 "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices."

Effective Leaders Have Vision Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no vision, the people perish"

Thomas J. Watson, chairman of IBM (1943) "I think there is a world market for about five computers."

Effective Leaders Put Others First (Love People)

I Tim 3:2,3 "given to hospitality", "not covetous"

Titus 1:7,8 "not selfwilled", "a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men"

Effective Leaders Keep Learning

Not afraid to sit down and learn from others who lead effectively. Pick their brains. We, through the years, have had many very successful leaders in the church. Don't be afraid to learn.

Continue your Bible study. Keep learning. If you understand the basics, study Daniel, Isaiah, Revelation. Keep learning. Those younger will be coming by to ask questions.

Effective Leaders Train Other Leaders

II Tim 2:2 "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."

Effective Leaders Believe It Can Be Done (I can't never could do anything)

"No one will listen to the gospel.  No one is interested in their soul anymore."

If you don't believe it can be done, move over and let someone else who does, do it.

Effective Leaders Don't Dictate, They Work

I Tim 3:1 "he desireth a good work"

Effective Leaders Communicate

I Tim 3:2 "apt to teach"

Titus 1:9 "Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers."

II Tim. 2:24 "And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth"

Effective Leaders Lead By Example (Different management styles, one dominates and dictates.  The other initiates and encourages.)

I Tim.3:4-5 "One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

Leaders that are not afraid to get their hands dirty...Be involved...Be willing to do yourself ANYTHING you are willing to ask someone else to do.

Titus 1:8 "sober, just, holy, temperate"

Effective Leaders Do Not Lead Alone (They surround themselves with good people)

I Tim 3:2 "the husband of one wife"

Example: Ronald Reagan surrounded himself with great (smart) people.

"If you think you're leading and no one is following you, then you're only taking a walk"

Effective Leaders Believe In What They Do And Who They Are

I Tim 3:9 "Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience."

(16) "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

Titus 1:9 "Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught"

II Tim 3:14 "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou has known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

II Tim 1:12 "For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

Effective Leaders Are Courageous

A 19th century preacher named Peter Cartwright was preparing to deliver a sermon one Sunday when he was warned that President Andrew Jackson was in attendance, and he was asked to keep his remarks inoffensive.  During that message, he included these statements: "I have been told that Andrew Jackson is in this congregation.  And I have been asked to guard my remarks. What I must say is that Andrew Jackson will go to hell if he doesn't repent of his sin."  After the sermon, Jackson went up to Cartwright. "Sir", the president said, "if I had a regiment of men like you, I could whip the world."

Effective Leaders Lead (They don't wait to see which way the wind is blowing.)

Does every member of a congregation realize the need for Gospel Meetings?  For evangelistic work?  For benevolent work?  Etc.?  Do we make decisions by democratic vote to the point that the Lord's work suffers because decisions have been made based upon the masses?  Should a 12-year old baptized male member in a business meeting be making decisions about the business of the church through the voting process? Leaders lead, even if the masses do not understand that they need it.  Leaders communicate this need, but they still lead.

Acts 15:2-31 "The Council At Jerusalem"

Heb. 13:17 "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you."

Effective Leaders Get Results

Titus 1:9-11 "Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake."

Effective Leaders Take Responsibility For Their Decisions

Heb. 13:17 "as they must give account"

Effective Leaders Are Willing To Go Through The Fire

II Cor. 11: 23-27 "Read"

Effective Leaders Love The Lost

II Cor. 11:28 "Besides those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches."

Effective Leaders Don't Just Talk...They Do

I Tim.3:1 "If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work."

Effective Leaders Have Wisdom

I Tim.3:6 "not a novice"

I Tim. 3:2 "sober"

Heb. 5:14 "But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."

Prov 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."

Leadership decisions affect peoples lives. They impact. Be Careful. Make good ones.

"For a long time, the Swiss had a lock on watchmaking. They built the best watches money could buy, and by the 1940's, they produced 80 percent of all watches worldwide. In the late 1960's when an inventor presented an idea for a new type of watch to the leaders of a Swiss watch company, they rejected it. In fact, every Swiss company he approached had the same negative reaction.

Believing his design had merit, the man took it to a company in Japan. The name of the organization was Seiko, the design of the watch was digital, and today, 80 percent of all watches use a digital design."

One decision can change the entire course of one's soul.
